If you have been in our Chiropractic office then you have experienced our three part spinal scan. For one of the tests, you put your hand in our technology and sit calmly for 5 minutes. This is testing your Heart Rate Variability (HRV), which indicates whether or not your body is adapting to life stress well. It is not testing how healthy your heart is! It is actually looking at the timing of your pulse, which tells us whether or not your body is in a stressed state. And your nervous system controls all of this!
To summarize: If you are under a lot of stress (physical, chemical or emotional) and/or you do not have a healthy lifestyle, then you will have a high variation in your heart beat to beat intervals. This is what the HRV test is looking for and it is a strong indicator for general health.
Good HRV score: Great ability to adapt to life stress and a healthy energetic life. On the scan, if your score (dot) is in the green box, then you have a health HRV.
Poor HRV score: Over time if you consistently have poor results, it leads to aging, pain, fatigue and poor health. The further the dot is from the green box, the worse your HRV is.
Think of a low HRV score like being in a car, stuck at a traffic light, and your foot is on the gas pedal, revving the engine. You may be able to rev that engine for a short amount of time, but if you continue doing it, what will eventually happen to the engine? Yes, it will wear down and break. Think of this analogy in your life – many of us live a go-go-go stressed life. We don’t stop from the moment we wake up in the morning until we go to bed at night. This is like revving the engine in a car. Eventually our bodies will get so run down that we will end up fatigued, injured or sick. We must add some ‘brakes’ in our day to help prevent this.
KEY POINT: Published research has shown that chiropractic adjustments improve HRV! Therefore adjustments decrease stress in the body and prevent pain and disease! Here are a few more researched-based methods for increasing your HRV and putting the ‘brakes’ on in your day. The more you incorporate into your day to day lifestyle, the better. Start with one and work your way up. And don’t forget all the regular health suggestions that positively impact our HRV, like chiropractic care, eating clean, and regular exercise. Those are all important, so keep doing them!
Get enough sleep (minimum 8 hours) Don't work too much or commute too far Try meditation and deep breathing (Headspace App on your phone) Do yoga Go for a walk in nature Listen to relaxing music Limit screen time. Take fish oil or eat wild seafood
What Our Patients Are Saying
"I have loved receiving chiropractic care during my pregnancy. I have been seeing Dr. Doni for about 4 years now, and had no hesitation about continuing care once I found out I was pregnant. I am due in two weeks and have had a zero back pain. I greatly appreciate the care she gives, nine month of pregnancy could have been a nightmare without it. I will be recommending her services to any pregnant women I know!"
